Invent-a-mayor

 by Louis Corrigan

The simple truth is that a mayors job is to deliver municipal services at a FAIR PRICE to Buffalo's citizens in todays' global economic reality. The Mayors loyality should be to its citizens rather than a party or elite job seekers. So, heres my speech of 23 April 2005.

23 April 2005

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am Louis Corrigan and pleased to welcome you this morning.

I am here to announce my candidacy for the Office of Mayor of the City of Buffalo.

Under the current state we find Buffalo in, I confess that I have no magic bullet or solution to return Buffalo to its once important past. No, I am here to talk about change and how OUR city can deliver municipal services at a FAIR PRICE TO BUFFALOS CITIZENS in today’s global economic reality.

In the course of the coming campaign, I will speak openly and candidly about how I can provide municipal service at a fair price. And, more specifically, how I’ll do it under a Control Board, unrealistic state laws (such as the Taylor Act), union contracts and most importantly in an economy that continues to lose jobs and where our average family income is about $17,000.00 annually.

Yes I would work for you, the people of Buffalo. Yet, we know change isn’t always equitable. To the city’s municipal employees and their families that change will be fair and equitable.

Then, the question is:

Why me? Why the Independence Party?

The answer:
- a Sunday morning headline from the 14 Nov. 2004 Buffalo News –

“The half-billion-dollar-bust/Federal aid poured into Buffalo for 30 years to combat poverty and blight. But city officials wasted much of the opportunity it offered, putting politics ahead of the city’s poor.”

Neither the party nor I carry that baggage. Our goal is government in the public interest. And yes, as your mayor I’ll work to change the way political parties serve us to bring about government in the public interest.

My definition of – government in the public interest – can be found in a new website called eriecountyindependenceparty.com home page.

Thank you for coming.

Do you think a candidate from another party who has taken an endorsement from a statewide health union which has driven the cost of medicaid sky high, and also from the police, fire and other unions is loyal to Buffalos citizens or corrupted by the system?
